When I introduced this first grade writing activity to my class, it quickly became a favorite. Students were so excited to work on their crafts and procedural winter writing tasks as they learned how to make hot cocoa. The best part? They couldn’t wait to showcase their creativity during craft time. I end this first grade writing lesson with cozying up with a warm cup of hot cocoa (literally!) and watching my students proudly show off the mugs they decorated on a bulletin board. A perfect elementary writing lesson full of learning, creativity, and a little bit of winter winter magic!

How I Organized A WINTER WRITING Lesson:
- Class Discussion: We started with a conversation about procedural writing. I asked, “What do we need to make hot cocoa?” and “What steps should we follow?” The students loved brainstorming their ideas!
- Guided Writing: Using the word bank and images, students wrote step-by-step directions for making hot cocoa. This scaffolded approach ensured everyone felt successful.
- Craft Time: Students colored and decorated their mugs, adding their own unique touches. The combination of writing and art made this activity so engaging.
- Hot Cocoa Celebration: To wrap up, we had a hot cocoa party! Students read their writing aloud, shared their mugs, and sipped hot cocoa. The pride they felt was unforgettable.
