A Loud Winter’s Nap activities to foster story comprehension

One of the most meaningful ways to engage young learners with this book is by centering an activity on the journey of Tortoise. He begins the story feeling grumpy and resistant to winter fun, but he’s found ice skating, sledding, and time with friends to love by the end. Here’s how you can turn that into an interactive activity:

Before and After Chart: Have students outline how Tortoise feels at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Use words like “grumpy,” “surprised,” “excited,” and “happy.”

Character Reflection: Ask students to write or draw what Tortoise might tell his friends about his winter adventures. This is a fun way to encourage text-to-self connections while practicing character analysis.

Story Sequencing Cut and Paste activity: In my study unit available on TPT HERE, I created a cut-and-paste activitiy asking students to order the events of the story correctly. For older students, there is a differentiation option where they also need to describe what happens on every image.

Text-to-Self Connection: Ask the student to think about a time where they had not wanted to do something but after did enjoyed it. Allow them in a drawing/writing activity to take themselves on this journey connecting personally with Tortoise.

What Happens Next? Ask students to think about what Tortoise will do the next winter. Will he plan a big snowball fight with friends or try building a snow man?

Opinion Writing: Do your students like winter? In my low-prep unit I have a writing prompt and a graphic organizer asking them to list 3 reasons why thee love winter.
